Frequent or expensive repairs
If the unit has needed several call-outs or another major component has failed, replacement can be better value than continuing to repair an ageing system.

Older heat pumps can often be repaired, but there comes a point where another major repair is simply putting more money into a system that is already near the end of its useful life. We can assess the existing unit and give you a practical repair-versus-replacement recommendation.
If replacement is the better option, we can remove the old system and install a correctly sized modern heat pump using the existing location where suitable, or recommend a better position if the original installation can be improved.
One symptom on its own does not always mean replacement, but several of these together can make a new system the more sensible long-term option.

A system that runs for long periods but still struggles to heat or cool the room may be worn, undersized or no longer performing efficiently.
Older heat pumps can use noticeably more electricity than modern inverter systems, especially when they are working hard to maintain temperature.
Increasing compressor, fan or vibration noise can point to wear. On an older unit, the repair cost may be better put toward a new system.
Some older models become difficult or uneconomical to repair when control boards, motors or other major parts are discontinued.
Age alone does not condemn a heat pump, but an older system with declining performance and repeated faults is often a good candidate for replacement.
We do not automatically recommend replacing an older heat pump. Our technicians can assess the condition of the system, the fault, parts availability and the likely repair cost before recommending a way forward.
When repair still represents good value, we will say so. When the cost is getting too close to a new system, we can quote a replacement and explain what you gain by upgrading.

We inspect the existing indoor and outdoor units, pipework, electrical supply, drainage, location and the area the system needs to heat and cool.
We recommend a replacement based on the room, how you use it and the installation conditions rather than simply matching the old model number.
We remove the old system, complete the new installation, pressure test and commission it properly, then show you how to operate the new heat pump.

In many replacement jobs, some existing infrastructure may be reusable. That depends on pipe size and condition, refrigerant compatibility, drainage, electrical requirements and whether the original installation was done correctly.
We assess this before quoting. If the existing location and pipework are suitable, reusing them can keep the replacement tidy and cost-effective. If they are not suitable, we will explain what should be changed and why.
The aim is not simply to swap boxes. It is to leave you with a system that is correctly selected, installed and set up for the home.
